Movie Review: Godzilla (2014)

Roar Than You Bargained For?

Godzilla has always been an unlikely icon - a towering, irradiated dino with anger management issues, wicked bad breath, and a reckless disregard for skyscrapers. But despite his grizzly demeanour, The Big G has wormed his way into our collective consciousness, clawed his way to the top of the monster heap and remained a cultural mainstay for nigh-on sixty years.

Things have been quiet on the Godzilla front since 2004’s ‘Final Wars’, but now, ten years later, Toho has teamed up with Legendary pictures to dust off the atomic lizard for a whole new generation. The man tasked with bringing Godzilla out of retirement was Gareth Edwards, the little Welshman that could, who brought us the slow burning indie drama ‘Monsters.’ Edwards was a surprise choice, but his retelling of the Godzilla myth is intelligent, meticulously staged, and relentlessly entertaining.

As monster movies go, Godzilla is surprisingly reserved. Well, as reserved as a film about titanic uglies knocking lumps out of each other can be. Edward’s metes out his thrills and spills in a manner that hearkens back to classic monster mashes such as Jaws and Alien.  It’s rare to see a film of this scale puts so much faith in its audience – Godzilla rewards patience and never indulges in action for action’s sake- and the movie’s ultimately better for it. When you really get down to it, this is still a big, goofy B-movie, albeit one leavened with a sense of care and realism that elevates it above your usual blockbuster.

There’s a palpable sense of weight and scale to the destruction, and the camera doesn’t shy away from showing us the human cost such a cataclysmic event would cause. You get a real sense of what it feels like to be a tiny, vulnerable human caught in between these lumbering behemoths.

Kick Ass star, Aaron Taylor Johnson, is the human heart of the film. He steps into the boots of bomb-disposal expert Ford Brody, who pings around the globe, following in Godzilla’s tempestuous wake. Taylor’s performance has come under fire from many corners of the web, and while it’s true he often feels like little more than a cipher -our conduit into this weird world of nuclear-powered beasties- he gets the job done, providing the necessary thrust to keep the film ticking forward. We’ll concede that he isn’t necessarily the most electric leading man, but he never needs to be, he’s simply the tissue that connects the bouts of monster mayhem together.

Ken Watanabe and Bryan Cranston fare better, the former’s wide-eyed reverence for the titular beast makes him feel like some kind of Kaiju hype-man, while Cranston makes the most of his limited screen time by acting everyone else off the screen. Rest easy, Breaking Bad fans - the one who knocks, knocks it out of the park.

Edwards swings for the moon during the film’s many set-pieces. We've all seen the HALO jump from the trailers and Godzilla is crammed with these kinds of tub-thumping, crowd pleasing sequences. A tense, vertiginous stand-off on a railway bridge is a real highlight, and the climactic confrontation between Godzilla and his MUTO nemeses is the kind of thing our 12-year-old selves’ dreams were made of.
And at the end of the day this really is Godzilla’s film. Sure, the MUTOs get the bulk of the screen time, but it’s the Lizard King who leaves the most lasting impression. He’s a frightening, slightly sorrowful creation, and when Edwards finally does unleash the beast his reverence for the character can be felt in every tic, tail swipe and teeth rattling roar.

Verdict
Relentless, intelligent and crafted with a rare verve and confidence, Godzilla, is a thinking man’s blockbuster. The only chink in its scaly armour is the slightly underwhelming human lead. Otherwise, this a film worthy of the Big G’s sixty-year legacy that finally puts the specter of Emmerich’s ’98 version to rest.

David Bowie New Album: Singer Releases 42 Words on 'The Next Day' Album

Legendary artist David Bowie recently released a brand new album titled The Next Day. Bowie made headlines back on January 8 when the 66-year-old released a brand new single titled, "Where Are We Now?" Bowie has been extremely quiet about the new album, so much so, that his first 42 words about the album weren't released until just recently.

Writer Rick Moody convinced Bowie to break his silence on the new album, which has been widely praised by critics and fans. So instead of a traditional radio interview or magazine cover article, Bowie released 42 words.

Here is a selection of the words used by David Bowie:
Effigies
Indulgences
Anarchist
Violence
Chthonic
Intimidation
Vampyric
Pantheon
Succubus
Hostage
Transference
Identity
Mauer
Interface
Flitting
Isolation
Revenge
Osmosis
Crusade
Tyrant
Domination
Indifference
Miasma
Pressgang
Rock legend David Bowie has gone all religious on his fans if his latest video is anything to go by. David Bowie was on the set of his latest music video for The Next Day in New York in monk robes, flat shoes and a long brown scarf.

Bowie, who has released 24 albums spanning a thirty year career, even roped in his old pal Gary Oldman to star in the music video.

Religious: David Bowie slipped into a monks outfit for filming of his new video The Next Day

For all you fans hoping for a tour you may have to wait. It doesn't sound like Bowie will be touring any time soon, although his wife Iman did recently hint in an interview that it is a possibility. With the single and album being released and music video currently being shot, the last ball to drop is the tour. Despite their being no confirmed reports that any sort of tour will happen, it isn't out of the question.

So lets all hope that a tour happens, why not support the legend that is David Bowie with one of our T-shirts:

Paul Weller to play for Record Store Day

Paul Weller is excited to announce that he will be performing at the Rough Trade East store in E1 as part of the Record Store Day celebrations on Saturday April 20th at 8pm.
This comes on the same day as Paul releases two brand new tracks ' Flame-Out! And The Olde Original - as a double a-side single, also as part of Record Store Day.

This will be a fantastic chance to get up close and personal with the Modfather himself.

Paul will be performing a 30 min set in the surrounds of the store. For this once-in-a lifetime show Paul has enlisted young whippersnappers Pete O'Hanlon and Josh McClorey from upcoming Irish group The Strypes who will feature on bass and guitar respectively. The line-up will be completed by drummer Jay Sharrock from Miles Kane's band.

From 8am Tuesday 16th April, there will be 250 wristbands only available from ROUGH TRADE EAST to give away - first come, first served. This wristband will guarantee them entry to Paul Weller's performance only - it will not guarantee queue jumping into the shop throughout the day on RSD.

Before the performance, staff at the shop will have to ask non-wrist-banded customers to leave. Then all wrist-banded people will get in.

Weller's RSD single features the two totally brand new tracks Flame-Out! and The Olde Original which are recorded exclusively for this year's Record Store Day. Destined to be one of the most hotly anticipated releases for the event, the double a-side will be released through Virgin Records as a collectable 7'vinyl on the 20th, with a digital release on the following day available for one month only.

Kings Of Leon to headline Tennent's Vital in August!

Kings Of Leon are set to headline Tennent's Vital on August 14.

The festival takes place at Boucher Road Playing Fields in Belfast, with further line-up news and details of the second date to be revealed next month.

Tickets go on sale April 12 at 9am [BST].

Of the Kings Of Leon headline set, Nicola McCleery, Head of Marketing for Tennent's NI, commented: "We're incredibly excited that Kings Of Leon will be taking to the stage at the festival this August, as we're sure our fans will be. They're one of the finest bands in the world and a phenomenal live act, and I'm sure they'll treat us to an unmissable set."

Last year's Tennent's Vital event saw sets from Foo Fighters, The Stone Roses, The Black Keys and Florence and the Machine.

Kings Of Leon bassist Jared Followill recently confirmed to NME that his band's new album will be out in September.

Followill said: "I thought we were going to make a really mature album but I'm amazed how youthful it sounds. It's like a mix of 'Youth & Young Manhood' and 'Because Of The Times'."

Before the album is released, Kings of Leon will headline this summer's V festival. Taking place over the weekend of August 17-18 at Hylands Park, Chelmsford and Weston Park, Staffordshire, the two-day event will see the band take to the main stage along with Beyoncé – which will be her only European festival appearance this year.

They will also play shows in London, Manchester and Birmingham in June and July, staring at London's O2 Arena on June 12 and 13 before playing Manchester Arena on June 24 and 25. The tour then runs to Birmingham's LG Arena on July 9-10.
Why not wear this fantastic T-shirt and stand out from the crowd! It's also on sale!!
